Myth: Spot Reducing Works
WRONG.Some of you may be wondering what Spot Reducing is, so let us delve briefly into its origin. The practice of “spot reducing” refers to performing certain exercises that target specific body areas, such as the abdomen, waist, or arms. Supporters of spot reducing advocate that doing exercises targeted at specific areas of the body will allow only that area to lose body fat. The basic idea is that if you do exercise to one area, you’ll reduce the amount of fat there.
Why its wrong:
The fact of the matter is that body fat cannot be burned off in only one specific area. Gender and genetics determine the order in which our body stores fats. When we gain weight, we add fat to certain areas before adding it elsewhere. Most men, for example, store fat around their middles, which leads to ‘love handles’ or a ‘spare tire’. Most women store fat on their hips and thighs. As we lose weight, those places are the last to lose. That’s one of the frustrations about losing weight: You can be in shape and still have a flabby tummy or bottom.
