There are so many toothpaste uses that go way beyond just keeping your teeth bright and sparkling. Here are some of the best toothpaste hacks to keep your home sparkling!

I love a good hack, don’t you? I’ve always knew toothpaste uses went further than what it was marketed for. However, the extent of my experimentation with toothpaste was to dab some on the occasional breakouts I get. It really does work, by the way!

You can imagine my surprise when chatting with a friend over FaceTime I saw her squirting piles of toothpaste onto her jewelry. But, she swore that nothing made her silver jewelry sparkle like toothpaste—and it turns out, she was right.

17 Uses for Toothpaste

It turns out that a basic tube of toothpaste is kind of a miracle item for your home! I had a lot of fun (and some weird looks) experimenting with toothpaste this week – and had to share my findings!

Here are 17 ways to use toothpaste that you haven’t thought of before.

What Kind of Toothpaste Should I use for These Hacks?

Before you get started on trying out these toothpaste hacks, make sure you have the right kind of toothpaste. You’ll need the non-gel type. Just grab the basic, inexpensive white paste. Make sure to get the mint flavor too – you’ll see why below.

Now, onto the toothpaste hacks! 🙂

#1 Clean Your Jewelry with Toothpaste

This hack really does work. A pea sized amount is all you need – just use a soft microfiber cloth to buff it out once you’ve applied it to your jewelry.

#2 Shine Silver

Likewise, you can also use toothpaste to shine silver. If you have family heirlooms that are looking a bit dull or tarnished, toothpaste will do the trick! Simply dab some on and buff it out. It’s easiest to work in small sections at a time for larger pieces.

#3 Stop the Itch

Getting bit by mosquitos is the worst! If you get those itchy welts like I do, there’s an easy fix to soothe your skin and offer some pain relief…you guessed it—toothpaste! Dab a small amount on and feel the pain disappear.

#4 Get Rid of Water Rings

Have a wooden table with a few water rings or stains? Same here. This is one of the toothpaste uses that surprised me the most—it really did work!

Here’s the table with a water stain before…

Simply take your toothpaste and put a dab on a clean rag, then rub away the water ring. You’ll want to scrub gently in the direction of the wood grain.

Once the area is covered, let it dry. To remove any residue, follow up with wood polish. See, all gone!

By the way, you can also use coconut oil to restore wood – here’s how!

#5 Hang a Picture Frame

Hanging a picture frame can be a surprisingly annoying task. The easiest way to do it is to put a dab of toothpaste on the hanging hardware attached to the photo, then hold it up against the wall where you want it. Press the photo into the wall, and the toothpaste will mark where your nail needs to go! This is one of my favorite toothpaste uses…it’s so easy!

#6 Hide Holes

Similarly, you can also use toothpaste when you take down photos and want to cover those holes up. Take a dab of toothpaste and use it to fill the holes. Once it dries you can paint over it and no one will know the difference!

#7 Clean Glass

Here’s one of the more well-known uses of toothpaste…cleaning glass! Just take a dab of toothpaste and add it to a soft cloth. Buff the glass and then rinse! This works best for smaller glass pieces in my opinion. If you want to tackle your windows, try one of these window cleaning hacks!

#8 Fix Scratches in Glass

Not only will toothpaste clean your glass, but it can actually help repair small scratches in glass too! This works really well on devices with glass screens like an iPad or smartphone.

#9 Soothe Burns

If you get a burn while cooking in the kitchen, a small amount of toothpaste can help soothe your skin and offer some pain relief. Make sure to run your burn under cold water first, and seek medical help if needed!

#10 Clean and Refresh Your Sink

If your kids squeeze a ton of toothpaste out into the sink…it’s okay. You can actually use all that extra toothpaste to give the sink a good scrub! Not only is it making the best of a potentially wasteful product, but it’s an efficient toothpaste hack too!

#11 Get the Smell of Garlic Off Your Hands

Anyone who has cooked with garlic knows that it’s hard to beat the freshly chopped version. However, one major downfall has been how stinky your hands get for hours afterwards! Until now, that is – thanks to this clever toothpaste hack. Squeeze a bit of toothpaste into your palm, then rub it over both your hands. Rinse and wash with regular soap and water.

By the way, this works well for onions too.

#12 Clean a Straightening Iron or Iron

My straightening iron gets quite a bit of use. As hard as I try to keep it clean, there is often some dark gunk that gets on the side. Weird as it sounds, toothpaste will clean it right up—I tried it myself!

Take a look at the plates below – you can see the top one has dark colored stains on it. The bottom looked the same before I rubbed it with toothpaste, but as you can see it’s nice and shiny now!

This is definitely a toothpaste hack I’ll be using – it worked so well and just took minutes. You can do the same for your clothes iron too.

#13 Make Your Mirrors Shine

Yup, another one of my favorite household toothpaste uses is to clean glass. This is most effective for smaller mirrors in my opinion, but it works on larger ones too!

#14 Clean Your Shoes

If your tennis shoes are looking less than stellar, give them a quick clean up with some toothpaste! For this toothpaste hack, you need an old toothbrush or something with bristles to get in and scrub out the dirt.

In the photo below, I did half the shoe while leaving the other half in its original state—definitely a difference!

#15 Get Rid of the Sour Milk Smell in Bottles

Ugh, is there anything worse than stumbling to your cabinet in the middle of the night to make a baby bottle, only to realize they stink? Any mom knows that rotted sour milk smell and how challenging it is to remove it.

Until now, that is. Simply add a bit of toothpaste, scrub it around and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse, then wash out with soap and water—no more sour milk smell!

#16 Defog Your Headlights

Foggy headlights in your car can actually be dangerous. Make sure your headlights are functioning at their best by defogging them with toothpaste. I know it sounds strange, but it works! Here’s the before:

And here’s after I gently buffed the headlights with toothpaste.

#17 Clean Your Toilet

This is a weird one, I know. But if you can’t stand the smell of chemicals, or just want your toilet to be minty fresh, this toothpaste hack is for you. Squeeze a dab into the water (make sure to keep your tube away from the “splash zone” if you are going to use it for your mouth!), get out your toilet brush and clean as usual.
